Twenty Four Hour Care

Thomas Owen House is a specialist nursing care home and provides 24 hour nursing care, often on a 1:1 basis.

We aim to provide a full range of social, physical and psychological care and support for people who have long term mental health problems, cognitive impairment, brain injury as a result of long term alcohol dependence, Korsakoff's syndrome, trauma or other pathology and who may present behaviour that is challenging to both themselves and their carers.

The service is specifically for those people whose behaviour presents a challenge to themselves or others; we often work with people who have experienced multiple breakdowns of previous placements. In many of these placements a level of aggression and severe anxiety has brought about the breakdown. Our model of care is based on a high staff ratio that accepts and reassures our service users. We have had only three placement breakdowns in 20 years.

In partnership with each resident, their families and any health professionals, we will develop a personalised care, treatment and daily living support plan which will effectively provide care, support and structure based on individual needs.

This will enable us meet all our service users' needs and ensure they maintain their independence, and right to choice and dignity.

Our highly trained care team are on hand to deliver the care that our residents need, from helping them to enjoy activities, to providing full support with any personal care needs.

Our building has been specially adapted and extended to enable people with physical disabilities to live with as much independence as possible. This includes features such as, passenger lifts, chair lifts and specially designed baths and showers.

We implement a policy and philosophy of limited or no use of sedation; instead we use our nursing skills of flexibility, acceptance, persuasion and kindness.
